Mapping Africa’s Place in Space: The Story of Temidayo Oniosun and Space in Africa

Our #OnePerson for April 2026 is Temidayo Oniosun

For decades, space science felt like a distant dream for many young Nigerians, a field reserved for global superpowers and faraway institutions. But Dr. Temidayo Oniosun, a pioneering space scientist and entrepreneur, has spent his career proving that Africa isn’t just a spectator in the global space race; it is a leading contender.

As the founder of Space in Africa, Oniosun has moved beyond mere advocacy to create a structured, data-driven ecosystem that has fundamentally redefined the continent’s role in the global space economy. His impact is no longer just a vision, it is measurable, historic, and multi-dimensional.

One of Oniosun’s most significant contributions is bringing transparency to a previously opaque sector. He established the African Space Industry Annual Report, which has become the global gold standard for market intelligence. His 2025 data revealed a staggering reality: the African space economy reached a valuation of $24.95 billion in 2024, far exceeding previous growth projections. By providing this valuation, Oniosun has given international investors and African governments the confidence to treat space as a critical economic pillar rather than a luxury.

Architecting Continental Governance

Oniosun’s influence reaches the highest levels of policy. He spearheaded the baseline studies for the African Union Commission, providing the economic and operational roadmap that led to the official inauguration of the African Space Agency (AfSA) in April 2025. This achievement represents a unified African front in space exploration, ensuring the continent has a centralized body to manage its celestial interests.

In August 2025, Oniosun bridged the gap between indigenous African culture and advanced aerospace technology with the historic “Egusi in Space” mission. By sending Nigerian melon seeds aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station, he led the first-ever initiative to put an indigenous West African crop into orbit. This mission wasn’t just symbolic; it provided critical data on crop science and food resilience in microgravity, proving that African agricultural heritage has a place in the future of space colonization.

Oniosun’s strategic vision is further evidenced by his role in launching the €100 million Africa-EU Space Partnership Programme. Running through 2028, this initiative is designed to leverage space technology to solve terrestrial problems, specifically focusing on digital resilience and climate action across the continent.

Beyond the stars, Dr. Oniosun remains deeply rooted in the development of his home community and the African tech ecosystem. As an active angel investor, he has backed over 40 African startups, fueling the continent’s broader innovation economy. Closer to home, the Temidayo Oniosun Foundation recently donated a ₦15 million ICT centre to Okaka Grammar School, ensuring that the next generation of Nigerian scientists has the tools to follow in his footsteps.

With a seat on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Space Technologies (2025–2026) and a spot on the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 list, Dr. Oniosun’s influence is truly global.

Today, Temidayo Oniosun represents a new era of African leadership, one that combines high-level systems thinking with tangible, grassroots impact. His work serves as a powerful reminder that the future of space isn’t just being written in Cape Canaveral or Baikonur; it is being written by Africans, for the world.
